NIGERIAN SCHOOLS FOUNDATION (UK)
Our Activities
The NSF (UK), started as an annual sports and family fun day event but has now expanded into other areas of need within the Nigerian diaspora community in the UK. We have held an annual sports and family fun day event since 2012. We added an annual lecture in 2014 with the aim, as key stakeholders in the Nigerian Education system, to stimulate awareness about the myriad of complex problems that may be impacting on the present education system. Between 2012 to 2015 our membership
numbers rose from 18 to 26.
In the autumn of 2016, on our 5th year anniversary, we held a high profile event at the House of Commons in celebration of this remarkable milestone. The key note speaker challenged the organisation to think big, think institutions and to think legacy. NSF (UK) relishing this challenge has since launched our vision 2020, a road map towards the lofty aspiration. Membership was 32 in the year.

In 2017, we introduced new initiatives, including collaborations with other organisations on areas of mutual interests (e.g. #BookDriveNigeria2017) and also monthly members networking sessions, where matters of interests are brought to members attention (e.g. health, healthy living, pension and financial inclusion). Membership grew to 36 in the year.

In 2018, we expanded the sports day into a whole day event with a fun run in the morning and an entertainment evening both, to complement the main event, the sports day. We also piloted a members social outing with a visit to Churchill's bunker in Wembley. Our inaugural entrant to the oldest essay competition in the World, Queen's commonwealth essay , won a sliver prize. Our membership base grew to 44.

In 2019 we launched our NEED , NSF (UK) Excellence in Education Development with the aspiration to support teachers back in Nigeria. We entered 30 students (27 from Nigeria) in the Queen's commonwealth essay competition. We are proud that a third of the entrants received awards. Our fun run raised money in support of Amaudo mental health Charity. Our entertainment evening saw our aspiring youths showcase their talents with performances in Afrobeat, classical instrumentalist, Rap,Spoken Word, Soul and Jazz. For this years outing members visited Buckingham palace. Our Director, accompanied by our education lead, was invited to a seminar with PhD students at the Oxford University on the topic "My experience of leading a self-help group in the UK to improve education in Africa". The students were enthralled about the huge challenges. Membership rose to 48 in the year.

In 2020 in response to Covid-19, and where feasible, we moved our activities online. In addition, to support community resilience we added a webinar series, Let's Talk About it.
